  • Focus on Educational Excellence: HITEP Makes the Grade

In this weeks’ blog we’re taking a short break from the educational content we like to offer, and focusing on a local resource for actual C.N.A education! We had the pleasure to visit with the amazing team at HITEP, located on Elmwood Avenue in Providence. Here’s what we learned.

Opened in 2007, HITEP was created to address one growing economic need: Opportunity for men and women who want to pursue a career as a Certified Nursing Assistant, but might have some challenges with transportation and tuition payment. It's a decisively urban setting, but with a wildly diverse student body. Students as young as sixteen up to sixty are signing up to attend HITEP, and for good reason.

Hernan Padilla, HITEP’s CEO has an enormously warm and friendly personality, with a great handshake. He sat down to offer his perspective on current challenges facing the Nursing Assistant field, and how they’re hoping to rise to the occasion by promoting a superior quality education and certification, in a fun an inclusive environment. We can attest to the lively and engaged future graduates working in teams in the skills assessment room, along with their professional demeanor during classroom hours. These students are more often than not fluent in two and often three languages, which gives them an advantage post-graduation.

The secret weapon for HITEPS’ success is the combination of CEO, Hernan but also Marissa Tavares, RN who serves at the Administrator along with being the C.N.A. course Instructor. Marissa is dynamic and incredibly knowledgeable! She comes to HITEP from a long and successful career as a Director or Nursing at a local nursing facility, among other accomplishments. What was particularly impressive about Marissa’s approach is how hands-on she is instructing her students. Her patience and willingness to spend additional time with each student was refreshing and confidence inspiring. You leave the Skills room completely confident that those future Nursing Assistants are thoroughly trained and competent.

HITEP really is a powerful voice for the redefining of a vocational identity in RI’s C.N.A. population, and the people they provide care for. It should be a priority for all educational resources to be their students’ loudest champions, and HITEP certainly is. With over 2,000 graduates and counting, HITEP offers affordable courses which are ideal for bilingual students. Payment plans are also available for those who might find the upfront tuition a hardship.

Hernan and Marissa, and the entire team at HITEP are a credit not only to the healthcare field, but to the Rhode Island economy as well. For anyone who may have interest in pursuing this calling as a career, please visit them online at or give them a call at 401-785-2202.
